Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., April 2001 Introduction It is not unusual for an author to use parts of their own life as subject matter, but in "Babylon Revisited," we see more than an average amount of Fitzgerald in the major character Charlie. This discussion will look at the overlaps between reality and fiction in this short story. The Story Charlie Ware led a glorious life with his wife Helen in Paris in the twenties. The rate of exchange was good at the time, so the money was as liquid as the booze. At least he thought it was glorious - what he could remember of it. But he also remembered that Helen his wife had died. He left his daughter in the care of her Aunt Marion, Helens sister, and fled to Prague for a convenient business deal. Yet it is his daughter, Honoria that serves as a beacon to bring him back to Paris with the thought of reclaiming her, "before her childhood is gone." When he enters Paris, he cruises a few of his old haunts, and even leaves a card where he might be reached if any of the "old regulars," should drift in. But Paris is quiet now; the same places are still there, but the people and the glitter and gaiety is gone. At some level Charlie is glad, none of "them," are here, yet some company, would be nice. He tries another "favorite" bar, but then is surprised, for "he felt polite in it, and not as if he owned it" This place had been "home" for him in the past because ...
