The main benefit of cloud computing is the cost. Data infrastructure (involving servers, storage and retrieval functions) can be very expensive - and even worse, could be considered functionally
obsolete in just a few years time. A company could conceivably invest millions in data storage hardware and software, only to find out that it isnt meeting its needs in
a short amount of time. With cloud computing, companies pay for as much data storage space as they need. There is no
guesswork in terms of what type of servers that might be needed; no more, no less. This also means capital expenditures can be put to other areas.
Furthermore the cloud requires less equipment. This means less space is required in a companys office. It also makes it easier for virtual workers -
they can access the could pretty much wherever they go. In this particular case, the cloud is convenient - the data is available on any device, at any time, from
any location. What are the disadvantages of cloud computing? Cloud reliability and security are
two very large issues preventing businesses from wholeheartedly embracing this as a storage method. The case study discusses what happened when AWS went out (due to human error, it was
later learned). This meant that those subscribing to the cloud service couldnt get their data, and that had huge, and problematic, ramifications. Cloud servers are supposed to have extensive backup
and redundancies in the event of such a failure - but in this case, these redundancies didnt kick in. There are still glitches, in this case, to be worked out.
