intelligence systems and software. Why would such a thing be necessary? How would it help the company? Business intelligence is kind of a catch-all phrase referring to software applications
that are used to analyze an organizations raw data, while helping others to extract useful insights from it (Levinson, 2006). If a business intelligence system is done right (as
in, the right software running on the right hardware), the data and information gathered can be used to improve business processes (Levinson, 2006). It can be used to help
everything from work flows to business improvements (Levinson, 2006). The problem that many companies have with business intelligence, however, is that
they believe that the hardware and software applications operate in a vacuum. The most effective way to set up for the most ideal business intelligence network, however, is to have
the hardware and software work in tandem (Basics of Business Intelligence Systems, 2003). On the hardware side, the systems generally focus on server systems (to run the applications), storage
systems (to store the information) and necessary database software. The servers available include the Microsoft Series and Linux operating systems that run on Intel processor-based servers (Basics of Business
Intelligence Systems, 2003). Storage needs to take into account compatibility with servers and networks, scalability, conformance to open industry standards and performance impact (Basics of Business Intelligence Systems, 2003).
The goal of the hardware infrastructure is to deliver quality performance and provide a high level of software compatibility (Basics of Business Intelligence Systems, 2003). Software, in the
meantime, is used to find the right information from the vast reservoirs of data (Basics of Business Intelligence Systems, 2003). The
