up getting hurt were the employees. What made these situations corporate scandals wasnt so much that some fudging was done with the numbers - according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles,
what was done wasnt exactly wrong - but that senior management of all these companies cashed out before the companies crashed and burned. At least this was the case with
Enron and Global Crossing. Worldcoms problem was greed - senior management forced the company to grow too fast and too far when management simply wasnt ready for it. When they
realized theyd bit of more than they could chew, an accounting method was used to hide the debt. The main problem with these scandals is that they were all generated
from the top-down - as business ethics researchers are discovering, a corporate culture is only as good as its CEO (Shaughnessy, 2002). In all three cases, the CEOs werent exactly
high on the list of ethics. Ethics, in its most basic sense, is defined by Websters dictionary as ". . . the branch
of philosophy dealing with right and wrong and the morality of motives and ends" (Shaughnessy, 2002, p. 20). But questions of ethics as they pertain to corporate culture arent exactly
new. According to Rushworth Kidder and Curtis Verschoor, the United States is currently entering the Third Age of American Business Ethics (Kidder and Verschoor, 2002). The First Age, they note,
