employees who might have such problems, and educating employees so that these problems dont start. Burlington Northern Railroad, the railroad company, is
one such company that has in place a more formalized substance abuse policy program. In this paper, well examine BNRs program, its components and its effectiveness by answering the following
questions. Does the company have clearly defined policies in regard to a drug-free workplace? BNRs program, in one way or another, has
been in place since the 1950s with its goal to help combat workplace substance abuse (Grinstein and Oliver, 1994). Such abuse, believes management, ends up impacting productivity and company effectiveness,
and combines mandatory testing, abuse training, employee empowerment and support programs (Grinstein and Oliver, 1994). During the mid-1990s, it was reported that
more than 93 percent of the programs substance abusers participating both stayed on their jobs at BNR, while remaining drug-free (Grinstein and Oliver, 1994). The reason, notes BNR leaders, is
because programs at companies that combine substance abuse education and support, along with testing, tend to have far better results in tracking and rehabilitation than those programs that simply rely
on testing (Grinstein and Oliver, 1994). The policies, overall, are fairly simple. Drugs arent allowed, period, because they can create dangerous situations
