for quick and efficient buildings is making the quality and integrity of the culture erode. In order to meet the increased needs of a quickly growing technological society, old structures
are abandoned for the newer ones, which are created in a less aesthetical, more functional way. But has something more intrinsic been lost with this loss of the aesthetically and
culturally pleasing building, or home? Stewart Brand believes that this is so. In his book, "How Buildings Learn" he states that there are at least six layers that a building
has. The first layer deals with the site, or the place the house or building sits. Location, as most real estate agents are quick to mention, is everything. The next
layer is that of structure, itself. He states that the basic structure of a building should last for a very long time, sometimes as long as three hundred plus years.
Next, is a term he calls the skin. This is the exterior of the building/house that must be replaced on occasion. This can run the gambit from paint to
rebricking, and mostly has to be redone as part of a maintenance plan with the building. This also applies to the services layer of the design, which means that the
wiring, plumbing, etc...have to be changed out every few decades or so. Space and stuff are the last to s layers in Brands book. These two categories refer to
the flow of the home or the office building. Interestingly enough, the flow of an office building typically, according to Brand, changes ever two to three years(Brand 1994). And of
course, stuff, is, well, stuff. Furniture, decorations, things that make the space more culturally and aesthetically pleasing to the inhabitants. According to Brand, and this is the crux of
