successful e-commerce operations to Germany - which would include finding partners for the supply chain as well as the selling chain. Also part of the plan is setting up a
web site in German to sell directly to German customers. Germany, in many respects, is an idea location for e-strategy. The German
mentality of ensuring precision and timeliness is great for supply chain management. The German highway infrastructure (and other transportation) is also solid - especially in the former East Germany, where
steps are being taken to improve transportation conditions. In addition, Germanys desire for foreign direct investment means that U.S. companies wanting to spend money (and capital) to set up businesses
in this country are welcome - meaning legal hurdles wouldnt be a problem. Added to that, more and more people are signing up with Internet ISPs, and the infrastructure for
both dial-up and broadband are quite good. The main problem with Germany, however, is the restriction on retailers, which is causing problems
for consumers (Anonymous, 1999). In one example, when Lands End (a mail order clothing supplier in the U.S.), talked about winter parkas, verbiage concerning the money-back guarantee was blocked out
(Anonymous, 1999). Why? Such a guarantee isnt allowed in Germany for fear it would reflect poorly on German businesses and would cost businesses too much money if enforced (Anonymous, 1999).
