at any Florida university. In this paper, well be using the fictitious Florida College as the institution, though the research on the concept of UBSC and its benefits and challenges
is real and accurate. Introduction As we move further into the new millennium, there are two interesting trends that are occurring.
First is the so-called aging of America. Baby-boomers, which have made up a fairly substantial part of the population, are beginning to enter their so-called "golden years." Though many arent
retiring fully, they are looking to "downsize" their lives. Theyre selling large homes in which they raised children and are moving to independent and assisted-living centers to live out their
final years. But these boomers arent retiring quietly to their rocking chairs or shuffleboard courts. They want to remain active, vital, contributing members of society well into their later years.
The second trend we see is on the other end of the population cycle. Students are enrolling in college in record numbers these
days; and these students come from all ages and walks of life. But expenses are also on the rise; its not feasible to keep raising tuition, but something needs to
be done to try to curtail these costs, while keeping high-quality education intact. One such method that some institutions of higher learning are
starting to consider is the University-Based Senior Community, or UBSC. This involves building independent living/assisted living/nursing care facilities on or near college campuses, with the colleges approval. This helps bring
