Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the total number of cancer diagnoses made in the three-county area of metropolitan Detroit stood at 3,359 (Komen, 2006). Of those diagnosed, 2,537 were Caucasian, (75%),
while 19% were black (19%) (Komen, 2006). Hispanic/Latina cases numbered 34, or 1% of the total population (Komen, 2006). Wayne County had the highest, with 1,463 diagnosed, while Oakland County
had 1,444 and Macomb stood at 742 (Komen, 2006). According to the 2004 Behavioral Risk Surveillance System, 78% of women participating
over the age of 40 throughout Michigan indicated theyd had a mammogram within the past two years (Komen, 2006). On the
state level, Healthy Michigan 2010 (2004) notes breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Michigan women, with almost 7,000 women each year diagnosed with the disease (Olszewki and
Wisdom, 2004). Furthermore, more than 1,400 women in the state die from the disease; and its the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths (lung cancer is the first) (Olszewki and
Wisdom, 2004). Between 1990 and 2000, breast cancers diagnosed earlier (thus leading to a higher survival rate), increased from 52.3% to
61.1% (Olszewki and Wisdom, 2004). On the other side of the coin, however, black women reported lower breast screening rates at 48.5% and higher mortality rates related to breast cancer
