girl who was recently released from the hospital following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Jennys parents described her childhood as normal and her development into early adolescence as
without incident. In fact, Jennys symptoms that were later diagnosed as bipolar disorder, and her specific symptoms relate to the variations in bipolar disorder that can be diagnosed.
Bipolar disorder I (BPD I), for example, includes the presence of one manic or mixed episode, in which both mania and depression are present. Depression is not a necessary
characteristic of BPD I, though it commonly occurs (APA, 2000). BPD II is more common than BPD I, and includes the presence of more than one episode of hypomania
and depression (APA, 2000). In both cases, these episodes have to be problematic enough to impair functioning or social activities. For Jenny, the difference between BPD
I and BPD II can influence the way in which treatment is identified. For individuals who have only manic symptoms, as can be the case in BPD I, the
disorder can seem less problematic because individuals often perceive their own mania as exhilarating or creative. Manic stages can seem in alignment with personality characteristics and may only be
perceived as disordered when they become extreme and impact social or personal functioning. Treatment, then, for BPD I may include methods of behavior modification to reduce the extremes at
which manic stages occur and may include the use of pharmacological agents that are better directed for reducing mania, rather than addressing depressive symptoms. In Jennys case, early indices
