solution to the ongoing problems. BPs history starts in 1909 with the formation of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company with the UK government taking a major stake
in 1914 so that during the First World War the oil supplies for the Royal Navy could be secured. Between the two world wars there was a general expansion of
the company with increasing levels of exploration supported with the new refineries being constructed. The focus on international expansion was increased in the 1950s when Iran saw a period of
nationalization and in 1954 the company was renamed British Petroleum (BP, 2010). Over the years the firm has demonstrated a string strategic insight into the market needs; it survived the
1970s oil crisis and despite a short period of diversification by the 1980s it was once again focusing on the energy sector. The UK government sold its remaining interest in
the firm in 1987 (BP, 2010). The merger with Amoco in 1998 added another dimension to the firm, as Amoco had been undertaking environmental strategies as part of their
operations and the emerging BP set themselves a goal of being a leader within the oil industry in terms of environmental management (Estrada et al, 1997). The overall approach and
desire to be seen as ethical, with a focus on environmental issues was seen with the launch of the new logo in 2000, where there was a sunburst logo in
