the FBIs serial crime unit. Taking in the period between 1980 and 1995, the book details Douglas experience in profiling criminals and how that experience - and job - impacted
the author on the personal front (Spoiler alert: It doesnt end very pleasantly for the author). In his book, Douglas works with novelist
Mark Olshaker to present an "inside the mind" view of some of the countrys most horrific criminals; those who were involved with serial murder and rape cases. The unit for
which Douglas worked - the FBIs Investigative Support Unit (ISU) - deals with these crimes by "entering" the minds of the criminals. That is, the members of the unit take
the time to study the mental processes and chemistry of the brains of serial criminals. Douglas himself did his "homework," as it
were, by interviewing still-living murderers such as Charles Manson and David Berkowitz/Son of Sam - and through these interviews ends up getting into the minds of other serial criminals. Douglas
claim to fame is that he developed criminal profiling techniques for the FBI, so he knows his stuff. But the book, from a personal point of view, is difficult reading
because it shows the toll of Douglas work on his health and personal life. This is very clear from the first paragraph of the prologue of the book, appropriately entitled
"I Must Be in Hell." "I was tied down and naked," he writes. "The pain was unbearable. My arms and legs were being lacerated by some kind of blade .
