themselves . . ." begins Jeffrey Foxs (somewhat) critically acclaimed book, How to Become a Great Boss. In putting together this
book, the author interviewed many CEOs and those in management to determine what makes a great boss. Geared toward those who already are bosses (or those who want to
become bosses), the book focuses on a series of "how tos," which range from grooming employees, to hiring the right employees in the first place, to different styles of leadership
(some that work and some that are woefully unsuccessful). In this review of the book, well certainly discuss the premise, and what its about. But well also see how what
Fox writes fits into the standard organizational behavior and structure, as well as how it might work with strategic management. Before
beginning the review, however, the writer of this report will be upfront - this was not one of the better books about business management that is out there. In many
ways, the book was simplistic and it seemed to "talk down" to those in management positions. This is an easy read, but that wasnt my problem with it. A
lot of what is being offered in this book is common sense (Hire Slow, Fire Fast is the name of one of the chapters, for example).
The problem with books like this is that already great bosses will likely not get much from it; whereas those who would really need it (the
lousy managers) probably would get about ten pages into it and toss it aside. Sadly, the book is clich?-ridden and, as mentioned before, simplistic. But well attempt to match what
