Though airline companies are subsidized by governments, they still feel the need to be competitive, and one of those ways is through then introduction of newer airlines, particularly the jumbo
types. But the two main manufacturers of jumbo airlines -- Airbus and Boeing -- are running into some delays and problems with
their newer lines. The Airbus A380, though currently flying for Singapore Airlines, ran into some bad delays and cost overruns before getting off the ground. Meanwhile, Boeings newest effort, the
Dreamliner 787 is running into the same problem, with its delivery date of spring 2008 being pushed back to the end of next year.
How are these delays and challenges impacting the airline companies waiting for these craft? In the short term, probably not a whole lot, as in the early days
of the 747, there werent a whole lot of passengers eager to fly them because of the higher cost. So in the short term, airline companies should build in appropriate
time frames for aircraft delivery, work with airports to prepare gates and runways, and assume that the first few flights will likely be a loss. Introduction
