business itself in an article for SmartMoney magazine. In short, throughout this article, she made her company appear larger than it actually was, adding the names of freelancers and part-timers
to the biographies of staff in her business plan; using fake e-mail addresses to give the impression there were more people on the roster than there actually were (not to
mention more departments than their were) and providing the suggestion to potential clients that executives from Blockbuster and Alamo were on staff (when, in actuality, theyd only provided her with
some free consulting services). Though she acknowledged she lied, she did point out that "such behavior is acceptable in business," and that
when it comes to start-ups, truth-stretching is common. But the questions we ask here are, how far can such a truth be stretched before the ethical line is crossed? And
more importantly, was Maria Bailey right to make her company larger than it should have been? Is any kind of lying okay when it comes to business - and "generally
acceptable" as Ms. Bailey would put it? Though shes right - such behavior does happen all the time in business - the
answer is no, lying at any time is not acceptable. We can use Enron, for example - the lies that both Arthur Andersen and Enrons management told ended up costing
untold millions in lost income for employees and investors, not to mention more costs being accrued by taxpayers for bringing various Enron managers to trial.
But even if were not discussing a multi-billion-dollar Enron trial, lying is simply not acceptable in a business sense.
