top brand in this particular arena -- but Blue Diamond Growers of California, a cooperative that has been in existence since the early part of the 20th century, is not
too far behind. Almonds, in general, are Californias largest crop, and this is a crop that brings in a huge amount of revenue into the state (Brauner, 2004).
On the positive side for Blue Diamond is that demand for the product is strong -- and there are very few places in the
United States (let alone the world) that grow almond crops (Eddy, 2004). Though almond growers continue producing huge crops, prices remain constant -- namely because the crop itself is so
dependent on a warm climate (Eddy, 2004). Spain, which is Californias only competition, considers almonds a secondary crop (Eddy, 2004). But Spain, ironically enough, is the largest single importer of
the U.S. almonds (Brauner, 2004). Additionally, economies of scale come into play because almonds can be farmed mechanically -- meaning growers (such
as Blue Diamond) end up having few labor expenses, not to mention the labor shortages (Eddy, 2004). There is also a demand
for almonds as well -- certainly almonds are found in candies and as snack foods. But theyre also used in ice cream (as pistachios, interestingly enough, as almonds store better
than pisatachios) (Eddy, 2004). Additionally, the overseas market is strong for both almond growers, Blue Diamond specifically. During 2004, for example, California
almond exporters exceeded $1 billion in sales, which was considered "a record in California agricultural history and a first among U.S. horticultural products" (Brauner, 2004).
