than retinal scanning or electronic fingerprint reads. In its most basic form, a biometric system is a pattern recognition system put in place to recognize a user through various means
(An Overview of Biometric Recognition, 2009). Biometrics can be anatomical (such as fingerprints) or even behavioral - a persons signature is also an example of biometrics (An Overview of
Biometric Recognition, 2009). So while the myth of biometrics is that its a futuristic type of system, the reality is that biometrics, in some form or another, has been
around for a long, long time. Biometrics comes from the Greek words bio - meaning "life" and metric - which, appropriately enough, means "to measure" (History of Biometrics; see also
an Overview of Biometrics, 2002). There are all kinds of biometrics, from fingerprints, to signatures, to iris scans, to DNA and so on (Schneirer, 1999). Biometrics is used for two
purposes: identification and verification (Watching You, 2001). Joano de Barros relied on the first known type of fingerprinting (and yes, fingerprinting is a
form of biometrics); de Barros found that in 14th century China, Chinese merchants would take childrens fingerprints for identification purposes (Osborn, 2005). Meanwhile,
