Greenbergs play, Take Me Out. As such, this play makes several pointed statements about diversity in America. Talk about ones diversity. The protagonist of Greenbergs play is biracial, and he
happens to be gay. Darren Lemming, feeling as if the atmosphere is conducive to his proclamation, tells the world at a press conference that he is gay. That he happens
to be a baseball player on a team doesnt seem to be the focal point anymore; his gayness is. And this has a direct parallel to what has been going
on in society. A persons achievements, abilities and gifts are overlooked and overshadowed by their sexual orientation, especially if one is gay. The way in which the homosexual, both
male and female, have been portrayed in the media and on the stage has changed somewhat over the decades. The earliest depiction of homosexuals, portrayed them as sissies. They were
often the butt of jokes or used as comedic relief during a particularly alarming or tense scene, much in the way that the black man was used during the same
period of time. It is this reality-based conception that is now being utilized in more of the films produced in the twentieth century. However, that is not to say, nor
should it delude the public into believing that diversity has been embraced. Lemming mistakenly believes that after his statement life will resume as normal, but it does not. His teammates
