As part of the settlement, the tobacco companies had to agree to stop making enticing ads and promotions that might be appealing to children, and also ad to agree
to develop educational campaigns warning against the dangers of smoking. These developments, however, were U.S.-only developments. In terms of the rest of
the world, they were alone when it came to fighting off Big Tobacco and the potential health problems that cigarettes would cause.
This is an issue -- for the most part, many countries around the world dont have smoking or non-smoking sections in restaurants, for example -- unlike the United States, which
has not only formulated such sections in eateries but also, depending on the municipality, has banned smoking altogether as part of municipal law.
The questions we ask here are: Is smoking on the increase in the rest of the world? How is Big Tobacco trying to market its products to these other
international markets? Are countries doing anything (similar to what the U.S. did) to try to limit smoking and its hazardous problems? Tobacco
is a highly competitive industry -- with sales dwindling in the U.S., these companies have had to try focusing on other countries around the world. But because of labor disputes
