the corporation that is bilking its investors out of billions because of shady accounting practices; that is destroying the environment because it wants to put up another plant in a
rainforest; that is laying off workers during a recession, even while top executives continue getting raises and huge compensation; that is refusing to take responsibility for its actions for releasing
defective products to the market -- etc., etc., etc. To listen to the media or your neighbors, for that matter, big business
isnt any good. Executives are only out for the profit, and anything that can boost profit is fine, even if its at the expense of the little guy. But how
true is this? Is all big business bad business? In the wake of accounting scandals such as Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing
-- scandals which have cost employees, investors and others billions of dollars, not to mention trust -- this question could almost seem laughable. Though these three companies were different, the
one thing they shared in common was the fact that they needed to "prove" to Wall Street that they were still financially viable and so, as a result, could continue
getting high ratings from analysts, which would then lure investors to continues putting money into these companies. The way in which they assured that theyd continue getting the analysts and
investors good will was through playing with their accounting figures. But according to some, big business goes beyond simply playing around with
