not have all the advantages, one of the oldest programs - and these days, the largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring organization - is Big Brothers Big Sisters. The idea behind
BBBS is to match caring, screened adult volunteer mentors (known as "Bigs") with youth that faces adversity, such as troubled households or those on the lower socioeconomic scale. The Bigs
are matched one-on-one with the children (known as "Littles") with the idea that Littles who have a positive and stable adult in their lives will help them avoid risky behaviors
and achieve better educational success. The "Bigs" and "Littles" operate through case workers, who monitor the matches. Once matched, Bigs and Littles meet anywhere from two to four times a
month for at least a year, and engage in activities that interest both (Big Brothers Big Sisters 2012). According to the organizations
website, Big Brothers Big Sisters has about 350 agencies nationwide and serves approximately 630,000 children, volunteers and families. In theory, the idea
that young, well-educated adults can have an impact on troubled youth seems like a good one. In reality the positive impacts of mentoring have been proven through various studies -
one that evaluated 1,138 youths, ages 10-16, who applied to one of eight Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies for a two-year period found that 46 percent of those participating were
less likely to have started using illegal drugs; 27 percent were less likely to have started using alcohol and 32 percent were less likely to indulge in violent behavior (Big
