and Petruchio, the man who ends up "taming" her and marrying her. The main plot is that no one cares to marry Katherine, because she is such an outspoken woman.
The problem is, however, that Katherines younger sister, Bianca, does wish to marry. While she is the favorite of the bachelors of Padua (where this takes place), it is Katherine,
the older sister, who must marry first (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2004). Though Bianca is actually the "secondary" female character in this play, she
ends up being a totally different person at the end of the play (in some cases, shes actually the "shrew" herself, in that she manipulates not only her father, but
her suitors as well) (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2004). It is, in fact, Bianca, who first forces her father to act, by desperately sending
out a plea to anyone who can "tame" Katherine and marry her. Many try, and few are, of course, successful, at least until Petruchio comes along. But it can safely
be said that without Bianca, there would be no story, as Katherine would likely be more than willing to live out her years in spinsterhood, convinced that no man is
good enough for her. Another issue that Bianicas situation brings up is the sign of the times. These days, wed scratch our
heads and say, well, if Katherine doesnt want to get married, whats to stop her younger sister from marrying? Thats not how they worked things in ancient Italy, actually. It
