most do not know his full story. What could make an outstanding patriot suddenly choose a course of action which would brand him a traitor for all time? Benedict Arnold, though very few acknowledge the fact, was a distinguished war hero. In fact, much of the early documentation shows that he was one of THE most daring generals on the battlefield, having fought with such luminaries as Ethan Allen and Montgomery(Flexner 43-50). However, with the capture of John Andre, Benedicts patriotism would end. Incriminating documents left little doubt as to Benedicts decision to hand over West Point to the British(Flexner, 322). As Benedict Arnold made his getaway, he managed to get a letter out to President Washington stating that he did what he did out of love for his country and that no doubt no one would understand his actions(Merrell, see also Elder). He was right. But the nagging question still remains: Why did he do it? The answer may very much lie in his personality as in anything else. Arnold seems to have been that remarkable mix of extraordinary genius and pathetic people skills. From most accounts he was highly ambitious and this made him relentless in his pursuit of wealth, fame, and power. It would seem that the beginning of the end started when some of the officers placed beneath him attempted to be reassigned stating that Arnold was reckless with the mens lives. They were denied their transfers and so enamored was Congress at his success, they promoted him instead. Several times his character would be called into question by his comrades in arms and the men who served with him, but Congress, too far removed from the reality of it all would continue to promote him.
