movie by the same name: Beloved. Part mystical, part dramatic monologue, the tale unfolds as a tale of vengeance. Given this, then, there is good evidence to show that the
character, Beloved, could be analyzed as a mythological construct of the Grecian Furies, returned from the dead to avenge her death. The Furies were born of sorrow, pain and murder
and as such are known as the angry ones(The Furies). These avenging Goddesses in Greek mythology were given to weighing the merits of a persons life when they died. For
those not yet atoning for their sins the Furies would relentlessly torment them until the debt had been paid. Another job given to the Furies was to sit at the
gates of Hades and determine who passed on into death and who would be refused admittance until their penance had been done. Sometimes, in the case of a particularly elusive
quarry, they would call on the services of a goddess named, Dike. The Dike were given the job of weighing and meting out justice without mercy. In the movie,
Beloved, there are some instances of Fury-like behavior on the part of Beloved. A quick summary of the storyline shows Sethe Suggs and her daughter, Denver, living in a house
that most people believe to be haunted. A friend, Paul D determines to exorcise the ghost for her. After he has done so, Sethe is so elated that she asks
Paul D to move in with them. Denver, however, is not so elated as the ghost was a little girl, her sister, in fact. Denver is not happy with the
arrangements, as she feels neglected. As the story unfolds a stranger comes into their lives. She is a very mysterious woman who resembles Sethes dead daughter, Beloved. In fact, Denver
