With more than 50 million customers in North America, Western Europe and the Pacific Asia region this is a truly multinational company (AXA, 2006) . In any company there will be a system for deciding which services should be promoted and expanded, simply continued with and where there may need to be cuts made. If we consider a BCG (Bosnton Consulting Group) matrix and apply this to AXA we may see how some of these decisions could be made. The BCG Matrix is made up of four categories, high growth and high market share products or services are known as stars, they may grow fast, but can die out quickly as well, these are particularly prone to fashions and trends (Thompson, 2005). They may also develop into cash cows; these are where there is a low growth rate but high market share (Thompson, 2005). These are the products or services that all firms want to have as they are the most profitable category. Low market share and a high growth rate is an unknown quantity, the final result is not known and as such this is referred to as a questions mark, it may become a shooting star or a cash chow, equally it may become a dog, this is a product or service where there is low market share and low growth (Thompson, 2005).
