1. Introduction Apple Inc., in a company that has a diverse past, able to develop a first mover advantage and gain market share the company has had
years of bounty where growth was good and profits were healthy. However, the company competes in the technological sector which is fast moving which meant it was not long before
the firm faced competition. Both IBM and Microsoft were soon able to compete effectively with the new products they brought to the market. With the changes Apple lost a great
deal of its appeal as it competed with new products. Over time the position has changed, and Apple has found new ways to compete with the development of the
iPod and the iPhone, products which are seen as lifestyle rather than purely technology products. The successes and failures of Apple are due to a wide range of issues, these
have included the way that they compete with others in the market, the technologies that have been developed and their marketing (Scott, 2008). However, it may be argued that a
huge influence has been the product range and the way it has been developed, marketed and leveraged to gain market share and growth. With this background a useful way
of examining the company to understand its current position is with the use of a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Matrix. This allows the company to be considered through its business
units and products by classifying them as cash cows, stars, question marks or dogs. By examining the firm in this way strengths and weaknesses will be apparent and understanding the
