The woman after all, was no more than chattel, the property of her husband. Things began getting a little more complicated however, when women started to fight back -- with that defense resulting in murder of the abuser. For the most part, women were jailed for murder even if the killing was done in self-defense. This still continues today - across the United States, jail cells are filled with women who are "doing time" because they had enough of the abuse and the hurt, and the only way they knew how to strike back was to get rid of the problem (i.e., the people who were abusing them). However, with domestic violence becoming less and less acceptable, the battered woman syndrome (BWS) is being introduced more and more into a court of law when murder has taken place between victim and abuser. This is as it should be, especially given the nature of an abuser who might end up killing the victim through his or her actions. BWS can he considered, in a court of law, a case of self-defense. In such a scenario, killing of the perpetrator in self-defense is an admissible defense. To support this assertion, we must first no little more about what BWS is. BWS as a defense was first introduced in court by attorney Lenore Walker as she was defending a woman who had called the police after shooting her husband six times as he lay in bed (Walker 30).
