plate. However, the history of the English language has some startling and at times humorous origins. Interestingly enough, even those who do not follow the game are prone to incorporate
it into everyday language, such as pinch hitting for someone, homerun, or batting a thousand. "The influence of baseball on American English at large is stunning and strong," says
Paul Dickson in his new book entitled, New Baseball Dictionary(Dickson 1999). Many of the old phrases that he lists in his book have long since faded from the more popular
phrases used to describe todays game. Its a shame too. Take for instance, a can of corn which was what an easy fly ball was called in the early 1900s.
This phrase originated from the way that grocers back then had to use a long stick to reach cans of corn off of the top shelf for the customer.
The phrase around the horn was borrowed from the circuit that sailors traveled when circumnavigating the oceans and would go around the horn of Africa. Other nautical terms include a
submariner, which when one thinks about it is aptly called since it depicts a pitcher that likes to throw underhanded. Other terms that owe their existence to the seas influence
are the batter being on deck or in the hold. The ocean is not the only place that baseball owes its colorful vocabulary to. Apparently, according to Paul Dickson, the
sport of Cricket heavily influenced the development of the game of baseball in the first place. The terms single, double,triple, homerun, and strikes, all originated with Cricket(Dickson, 1999). While the
