based on this overview and my other research, whether BoA would make a good investment. Economic Trends Banks are popularly blamed for the
global financial crisis of late 2008 and with good reason. Shoddy lending practices by financial institutions (and Bank of American was one of them) combined with securitized mortgages, derivatives and
credit default swaps that no one really understood, along with an imploding housing market, put a chokehold on the economy. Three years after all of that came to a head
in the fall of 2008, the nation (and the world, for that matter) is still suffering fallout from what the banks have done in the guise of higher unemployment and
very low consumer confidence. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 was supposed put a hold on banks and their ability to trade misunderstood and complicated
financial instruments, but thanks to the banking lobbyists, that particular bill was watered down. What are we facing now? Morningstar analyst Jim
Sinegal (2011), in his recent analysis of both Bank of America and the industry, points out that U.S. financial institutions are likely facing what he termed a "Japan-style macroeconomic scenario,"
one in which there is weak loan demand and low interest rates. This could, he points out, result in years of smaller balance sheets and declining profitability (Sinegal, 2011).
