It began with the need to share information and over the past two decades has progressed to sharing processes as well. What is B2B process integration? B2B process integration is the practice of sharing information between companies that maintain some form of vendor-supplier relationship. A widget manufacturer is likely to share raw material inventory, production planning and cost accounting information with a supplier of raw material; it is likely to receive the same kinds of information from its widget customers. The purpose is to allow each organization to operate more efficiently by carrying only those inventories of items (either input items or finished product, depending on the location on the supply chain) it expects to need in the short term. Doing this allows each organization to automate processes that formerly required a great deal of individual attention and effort to maintain, thereby reducing internal costs while increasing internal efficiency. Gartner Group observed, "In the past, companies have integrated data. Now we are seeing the integration of applications. Above and beyond that, we will move to the integration of processes" (Lawton, 2001). JIT has been common in industry for very nearly 20 years, and where companies needed to maneuver through complicated contortions, proprietary programming and other large problems in the past, today there is prepackaged software that essentially places business-to-business integration into a box.
