that the poetry of this particular time was not as simple or pure as most would believe. He argues, in essence, that it was a deeply seeded part of the
violence and imperial policy in the culture of the Aztec people during the 15th and 16th century. The following paper analyzes this article, and a poem (author unknown) and illustrates
that while Damrosch may have some points, he is studying poetry and poetry is not often a venue of political involvement but rather a personal artistic examination of life and
oneself. Aztec Poetry Towards the beginning of his essay Damrosch states, "I wish to show that Aztec aestheticism was in fact
deeply implicated in the carrying through of Aztec imperial policy, and indeed that it even contributed directly to the brutality with which that policy was pursued" (101). In essence he
is noting that the aesthetics, the beauty, presented by poets who are artists, was a player in the violence and changes that took place during this time. He states that
"Aztec poetry is rarely pure and never simple" (102). In these statements Damrosch is indicating that the poets were actually deeply immersed
in the way the political world was playing out in the conquest. And clearly he argues that the poetry was never simple. This seems a very broad statement in light
of the fact that poetry, no matter the culture, can be quite simple as it presents ideas and thoughts. Poetry is not something that people normally write in order to
