One can find them carved into steps, on the sides of buildings, and essentially within any area of the remains of the ancient cities of the Aztecs. Many look at
the writing today and see it as art for, like the hieroglyphics, there are no words, as we know them, but rather pictures of objects and people and symbols, presenting
the viewer with something completely incomprehensible and yet powerfully beautiful. Bearing this in mind we examine the codices of the Aztecs and discuss whether they are art, writing, or both.
The argument put forth is that they are both. Like calligraphy, an ancient, and modern, form of writing in China, the codices are both artistic and literally informative.
Aztec Codices As mentioned, the Aztec codices are much like Egyptian hieroglyphics. They are symbols, pictures, and illustrations of objects and actions. However, they are not obviously such to
the layman that examines them. A simple individual who looks upon the codices may well not see anything but a carving that is beautiful and somehow expressive. The language is
one that, like hieroglyphics, is learned through a great deal of difficult study. As one author states, "The Aztecs and other Native people of Mexico have a very complex and
elegant non-linear writing style. We call their ancient documents codices (hieroglyphic pictures)...because you need to know the code to understand what theyre about" (Anonymous Ancient Aztec Codices: Beyond Words, 2002;
beyondwords.html). However, if we set aside the condition wherein most people view it as art merely because they cannot read it, we are left with a language, with writing
