luxury to many, aviation is actually a necessary component of practically every aspect of our modern world. Many aspects of our personal and economic spheres would be dramatically and
adversely impacted without the availability of fast and efficient air travel. Whether directly or indirectly, our world depends on aviation. Without it we would literally be stalled in
our tracks. Aviation also has its negativities, however. One of these negativities is the industrys impact to the environment. The industry is associated with noise pollution, for
example. Far more importantly, however, the industry takes a heavy toll on air quality and is believed to be a primary contributor to global warming. While just a
few decades ago such impacts were simply written off as a necessary part of doing business, today the industry is being held more and more accountable for its less than
positive impacts on the world. Indeed, there is even a growing acceptance within the industry that it has a social responsibility for its environmental impacts.
One of the primary impacts to the environment wielded by aviation is the land that the industry consumes for its airports and service facilities. This land
consumption both directly and indirectly impacts the environment. Although the industry tries to focus on the utilization on non-ecologically sensitive lands, sometimes there are few options available for designing
facilities that are big enough and close enough to meet the demands of its customers. There is, after all, a constant growth in demand for air transport.
