opposed to cargo carriers like FedEx and UPS. History of Aviation Well begin with a relatively brief history of aviation (if it can be done briefly); thanks go to
PBS that did a series on it and has given us a timeline of important developments in the field. We start on December 17, 1903, when the Wright Brothers became
"the first to fly a powered aircraft" (Chasing the sun). The Wright Flyer, with Orville Wright in the pilots seat, flies 120 feet and stays in the air for 12
seconds (Chasing the sun). The brothers make three more flights at Kitty Hawk that same day; the longest covers 852 feet and lasts 59 seconds (Chasing the sun). The first
successful airplane flight in Europe came three years later, on October 23, 1906; a pilot named Alberto Santos-Dumont, who was born in Brazil, makes a 200 foot flight in Paris;
in January 1908, a pilot by the name of Henry Farman "becomes the first to officially fly a one-kilometer circular course, the worlds longest distance at the time" (Chasing the
sun). Another man whose name is known to aviation, Glenn Curtiss, "wins a silver trophy and national acclaim for becoming the first American to officially fly a distance over one
