With last Decembers grounding of six aircraft to what the company attributed to an "engineering directive" (Anonymous, 2000, p. PG), one could readily surmise that an integral
component of adequate resolution rests upon what is considered to be the companys strategic issue orientation. Clearly, this maintenance issue has impacted Ansetts external operations to the point of
forcing president and CEO Gary Toomey to stand up, as well as succumb to, accusations that the company is jeopardizing its otherwise good reputation. Competition notwithstanding, Ansett has larger
issues to deal with than trying to outsell the opponent airlines; rather, its most pressing need is to quell the public concern over safety of its aircraft. "...Ansett had
not broken any rules in not undertaking the maintenance check until now, but said the matter was of considerable concern" (Holloway, 2000, p. PG).
