premise is that college/university students study an average of ten or more hours each week. It is important to understand the different terms relative to average. There are three types of averages: the mean average is obtained by summing the numbers and dividing by the number in the sample, it is a straight arithmetic average. Example: 10 + 5 +20 = 35 divided by 3 = 17.5. The median average is obtained by listing the set of numbers in order from low to high or high to low. The mean average is then the number where half the population falls above and half the population falls below. Example: 10, 12, 15 = median average is 12. This only works if the total sample size is an odd number. If it is an even number, the median is the simple average of the middle two numbers. Example: 10, 12, 15, 20, find the average of 12 and 15 = 13.5. The mode average is the number that has the greatest frequency. Example: 10, 14, 12, 18, 12, mode average is 12. The true average is obtained through a statistical estimation process and subsequent analysis. It has to do with confidence level and confidence interval (School of Computing, 2007). Without going into statistical explanations, every empirical study establishes a confidence level that reports how much confidence the researcher has in the data (School of Computing, 2007).
