the most important thing in existence. Through learning about oneself, quite often through nature, one also comes to a closer connection and understanding of God. His work established a more concrete way for Americans to see themselves as heroes, individualists who were always seeking meaning within themselves, first and foremost. With that in mind the following paper examines what is more important, autonomy or community. The paper discusses both sides equally. Autonomy or Community One thing that Emerson wrote that seems to sum a lot of his ideals up is as follows: "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string." This denotes firstly follow ones own ideals, ones own soul, intuition, ideals, and path in life, perhaps as ordained or planned by God. And, if a person is not seeking out their identity it could well be argued that they are not benefiting their community because they are not a valid part of the "whole." From a realistic perspective, one that takes into consideration common every day life and the role of community or individual, there are many ways to be part of a community, even if one is truly independent. When a person is truly autonomous they are still, in subtle ways, contributing because they are part of the community, even if not actively so. It comes down to the old adage of "it takes all kinds" for communities are made up of varying people who all seem to serve a purpose in their roles. And through having different sorts of people, with varying levels of being independent and community oriented there is a powerful balance in most respects.
