industry. For many countries the automotive industry is a key element of their economy, and seen as a strategically important factor by government. This is the case for Korea, Malaysia
and Thailand. When looking at the position of the automotive industry in each of these countries, including the aims and goals for the industry set by government there are both
similarities and differences, and the environment as well as performance can be considered in order to determine the best potential future strategies for the industries in each individual country. The
automotive industry in Korea is very important, it is the fourth-largest automotive producer in the world when measured in terms of volume, and in terms of exports it is the
sixth largest (KAMA, 2010). This demonstrates the importance of the industry, and its achievement of the goal set out in 2005 (Frost and Sullivan, 2005).
The industry in South Korea started out mainly as an assembly operation, importing the majority of parts from Japan, as well as the US, and expanded form
a basis into a fully functioning and integrated automotive industry. When looking at the production within the country it is possible to see that there has been a significant growth,
