Essay / Research Paper Abstract
(10pp) Sudden coronary arrest strikes about 350,000
people a year in the U.S., killing 95 percent of
them. The definitive treatment is defibrillation —
a controlled electric shock to the chest that can
restore the heart’s normal rhythm. The chance of
survival for cardiac arrest victims drops at a rate
of 10 percent for each minute they don’t receive
help. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

do? If anyone experiences cardiac arrest, you must respond rapidly to save his/her life. Typically, the initial rhythm in sudden cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia
(VT). The most effective initial treatment for either arrhythmia is electrical defibrillation, which rapidly delivers large amounts of electricity to depolarize the myocardium and help restore a stable, organized rhythm.
Any delay decreases the chance of successful defibrillation. In other words a sudden cardiac arrest means that the heart, for
a variety of reasons, has been forced out of its normal rhythm. This electrical malfunction is called ventricular fibrillation. It is not the same as a heart attack, which is
caused by a temporary blockage in the flow of blood to the heart. When ventricular fibrillation occurs, the heart stops beating and quivers in the chest. The first symptom
is immediate loss of consciousness. Sudden cardiac arrest often occurs without any warning, and is not limited to the elderly
or to people who would appear to be at high risk for heart problems. A "chain of survival" developed by the American Heart Association has four steps which must be
