Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Research-based instructional approaches have afforded teachers and parents alike the opportunity to reach and teach special populations that historically have had few options for educational achievement. In light of the fact that learning difficulties are inherent to autism, it stands to reason how research-based approaches such as applied behavior analysis are the most appropriate and effective ways by which to overcome the challenges related to teaching those who cannot learn with conventional methods. inherent to autism, it stands to reason how research-based approaches such as applied behavior analysis are the most appropriate and effective ways by which to overcome the challenges related to
teaching those who cannot learn with conventional methods. A growing consensus of beneficial ways in which to teach autistic children believes that applied behavior analysis (ABA) and discrete trial training
offer a substantial foundation upon which overall learning is better approached. The concept of applied behavior analysis, while not new in relation to teaching options for autism, is meant
to expound upon approaches that already exist within the realm of its principles. In essence, the ideas that support applied behavior analysis, such as stretching out the length and
intensity of teaching sessions from two thirty-minute sessions each week to thirty hours, bring to light the increased level of success the autistic child could have if given more of
a hands-on opportunity to succeed. Fundamentally, Heflin et al (2001) define applied behavior analysis - which has "a 40-year history of significant and successful strategy development, verification, and generalization" (p.
66) - as being formulated to address myriad challenges inherent to the coupling of autism and learning. Such issues as low motivation, limited reinforcement repertoire, short attention span, distraction,
slower learning, difficulty grasping abstract concepts, poor observational learning, poor differentiation between relevant and irrelevant stimuli, and sensory/motor impairments represent the foundation upon which applied behavior analysis was established.
"Direct measurement of behavior through systematic observation and recording and the functional analysis of the causes of behavior have been the cornerstones upon which effective communication instruction is based and
by which the social validity of intervention is measured. The basic principles associated with applied behavior analysis have been successfully applied in general communication instruction and imply practitioners interests
