of traveling with massive amounts of luggage, spending huge amounts of money and doggedly trudging through museums and castles is disappearing, and other types of travel such as "cultural tourism,
alternative tourism, low-impact tourism ... and eco-tourism" is taking its place (Rickets, 1991, 9). As tourists awareness of the environment has grown, so too has their appreciation for its
fragility and their impact on it. Many people now prefer to study one area in-depth for days or weeks; to go lightly and leave no trace of their presence
on the land. Their desire to truly understand the places they visit has generated "global trends [that] show that tourists are looking for more of the local culture; more (local)
music, more (local) food, and more contact with the (local) people" (Rickets, 1991, 9). Other changes in tourism reflect the current uncertain economic climate. "Yuppies" now see
up to 40% of their income going to pay basic living expenses, which leaves them with less discretionary income (Rickets, 1991). At the same time, vacation planners are seeing
an increase in family vacations, and the need to address the requirements of children (Rickets, 1991). Finally, there has been growth in "non-traditional" homes, and participants in these
households take vacations that appeal to their interests (Rickets, 1991). People are now interested in learning something as they vacation, rather than just taking a break and sleeping on
