(Blainey, 1995). Cultural clashes are nothing new in Australia, with the Englishman and the Aborigine at odds, not unlike the English colonist and the Native American in the United
States. The affable land down-under often faces the unenviable task of trying to please everyone, at which it is usually quite successful, but sometimes at the expense of its
own individual identity. Australia has been a loyal member of the British Empire as well as a trusted ally of the United States. Despite its geographical distance from
the worlds leading economic nations, it remains a player of increasing prominence in international economics. The primary objectives of Australia as it approaches the new millennium are little different
than that of any other progressive country -- human rights, continued economic prosperity, national security, and resolution of the issue whether it should be established as a republic or remain
a constitutional monarchy. Always lurking in the background and occasionally emerging to the forefront of Australian foreign affairs is its sometimes volatile relationship with Indonesia. It is
the Asian nation which is the closest in geographical proximity to Australia, as its "southernmost borders are as close to northern Australia as Sydney is to Canberra"(Foreign Affairs and Trade,
1998). The two close, but very different nations seem to have little in common except for serving as mutual markets for commodities trading (Arndt, 1993). Yet, there has
