the truth. This is because the reason that Austen focuses on marriage and courtship is because of the pivotal role that marriage played in the position of women in English
society during Austens era. At this time in history only lower class women worked outside the home and then they did so for miniscule wages that helped their families
survive, but provided for little else. Many feminist studies have viewed Austen as either a conscious or an unconscious subversive who voiced
feminine frustration at the rigid and sexist social order, which enforced womens subservient role (Morrison 13). Nevertheless, some feminist critics, such as Julia Brown, have noted what they see as
Austens "cowardly accommodations" with patriarchal order (Morrison 13). What these two rival camps of critical opinion share are that they both see Austens essential subject matter as the patriarchal order
itself. What feminists who criticize Austen overlook are the circumstances of her social world. There were numerous social restrictions hemming women on all sides as to their options, which
basically limited them to either living off the largess of relatives, living on a subsistence wage as a governess looking after other peoples children, or marriage.
As this indicates, a good match was a womans best chance for financial security and social status. Therefore, by exploring marriage, Austen basically was exploring
the social world of women during this time. Within this social realm, Austens heroines not only found the proper man, but did so with a flare and individuality that
