relative of Julius Caesar, Augustus. Augustus was a bit of an enigma and rather awesome to the people who lived at the time. Looking back from the twenty-first century, it might appear as if he were just another ruler, but to the people he was more than that. He was a god. A major question then is, was there a conflict between the Roman emperor Augustus political position as princeps and the forms of worship established to him at Rome during his lifetime? In order to answer that question, it is important to look at Augustus life and times. The Emperor Augustus of Rome was born with the name Octavian on September 23, 63 B.C. (Chew, 1995). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus in 44 B.C., something that occurred after the murder of his great uncle, Julius Caesar (1995). During the time when the Civil Wars took place and the Imperators, the actual power was held by the generals who commanded the large armies ("A quick," 1999). Octavian, later was given the title "Augustus" by the Senate, but was also given the titles "Princeps" and "Pontifex Maximus", along with broad powers to reform the Republic (1999). Augustus is considered to be the first Emperor even though he never proclaimed himself as absolute ruler (1999). It is interesting to note that the Romans preserved the delusion of having a Republic until quite late in the Empire (1999). The Emperor was simply considered as First Citizen or "Princeps" until the time of Diocletian which would not occur until 284-305 A. D. (1999). During this time frame, the Emperor became an absolute despot who was surrounded with magnificence and ceremony, somewhat like a Mesopotamian ruler ...
