"tranquility of order" (Keenan, 2005). In this definition, Augustine locates the factors controlling whether or not the individual is at peace as being internal, rather than external. Whether one
feels tranquil is an internal condition, not dependent on external conditions. As Keenan (2005) points out, Augustine does not say that peace consists of living an ordered life. Being ordered
in ones life, as anyone living through a busy schedule knows, does nost necessarily mean that one finds peace--exhaustion, yes, but not peace. Peace is generally thought of within
two contexts. There is the personal context, i.e., finding peace in ones life, and the greater context of peace within society. Augustines definition is quite applicable to both of these
areas, the microcosm and the macrocosm. First of all, there is the microcosmic view, which involves personal perspective. In Western society, we tend to think of peace in negative and
subjective terms. We think that peace is an internal condition that we achieve when the external conditions of our lives are harmonious and that unless these conditions are meant, we
can find no peace. This perspective places obtaining personal peace as outside of individual control. However, this is not necessarily true. By prioritizing our lives, by placing concerns such
as family, friends and personal interests, such as hobbies and projects, ahead of work related issues imposed by others, people can gain some sense of peace in that they feel
that they have autonomy over their own lives. From the perspective of a spiritual leader, such as Augustine, who is focused on the greater order of the universe, the
chaos of modern life and the disorder, the war and terror that is often in the news, are all illusions and divine order reigns even when it is not evident
