and the name. For the contemporaries of the great mathematicians recognition may be harder to gain, the attention has been drawn away form they and focuses on another. Augustin-Louis Cauchy may be seen as one of the great mathematicians that was unfortunate enough to live whilst there were other great, more popular mathematicians for history to remember. Cauchy was a man who wan not popular with his peers and suffered due to this lack of popularity as well as his circumstances, but this did not constrain his through and achievements. Indeed, his prolific writing; more than 700 articles, and wide ranging studies may have been partly in reaction to the circumstances in which he lived. It is only at looking directly at the work he performed, its range scope and importance that the real value may be fully comprehended. To examine and understand the work of Cauchy it needs to be placed into the perspective on which it occurred. To gain a context there needs to be a consideration of the development of maths and calculus from its beginnings up to the time when Cauchy himself started work, as these were the mathematical foundations upon which he was to build. Cauchys own background also needs consideration, as the work was also a reflection of the man and his circumstances. After this some examples of the type of work he conducted will be examined. It is worth noting that it would be impossible to examine all of his work, as he worked in almost every area of mathematics, seeking to help students and clarify calculus as well as build on or prove other theories models and create his own. 2. Background To place the developments of Cauchy into a full context the developments that occurred before his work requires ...
