the world as the "father of sociology". Born in the last years of the eighteenth century, on January 19, 1798, Comte found many reasons to formulate his basic sociological
premises (Delaney, 2003). France was enduring one the most turbulent times of its history and Comte found a critical need to define the basic laws that governed societal interaction
(Delaney, 2003). Comte had a strong background in mathematics and intended for this new approach to social problems to be governed by the hard sciences as opposed to the
humanities (Delaney, 2003). He originally sought to call his newly emerging field "social physics", a term that clearly reflected his belief that sociological interactions adhered to hard scientific principles
(Delaney, 2003). Comte found, however, that that term was already being employed by another social statitician, the Belgian born Adolphe Quetelet (Delaney, 2003). Not to be deterred, Comte
coined the word "sociology" to describe the social interactions that so fascinated him (Delaney, 2003). Delaney (2003, 44) emphasizes that Comte sought to separate religion from science, to synthesize
the basic principles of the various branches of the sciences into one integrated system of ideas, and in so doing to provide:
"a system that was built on an intellectual and moral basis and allowed for science to intervene on behalf of the betterment of
