had been an integral part of a family since the days of slavery. It is a piano that serves as a bone of contention among family members, and an object
that also incites the arrival and existence of ghosts from the past. The following paper analyzes various aspects of Wilsons play, illustrating how the piano is a very important and
symbolic character in the story. The Piano Lesson Two of the most powerful and prominent characters in the story are Boy Willie and Berniece. They are brother and
sister and their differences come through in the subject of the piano. Willie wants to sell it so they can buy the land that their ancestors were enslaved on and
Berniece does not want to sell the piano, no matter the gain. In fact she has been courted by a man, a preacher, who also has urged her to sell
the piano. Berniece is determined that this piano is their history, their legacy and it will not be sold. In essence, Willie could care less about his sister or her
thoughts concerning the piano and Berniece does not trust Willie for she sees him as an opportunist and a criminal. The piano serves as the dividing force between them.
Very quickly in the story the arrival of a ghost appears and this is powerfully connected to the relationship between Berniece and Willie,
as well as the relationship between the past and the present as it relates to the piano. Berniece claims she sees Sutters ghost at the top of the stairs. Sutter
is the individual who once owned their family and owned the piano which Willie stole back. Willie does not seem to care what Berniece thinks she saw and does not
