prone to anger and hypocritical in his worldview; yet, he becomes a sympathetic tragic hero due to the fact that Wilson helps the audience understand Troy and the forces that
shaped his character. Early on in the play, Wilson establishes Troy as the quintessential patriarch, dictating to those around him the attitude that, within his home, he is the
reigning monarch and the sole authority. He tells a friend, "I dont care what nobody else say...Im the boss around here. I do the only saying that counts" (Wilson 1379).
Troys belligerent assertions of male privilege undoubtedly are connected to his relationship with his father, a man who "aint cared nothing about no kids" (Wilson 1386). By asserting his importance,
Troy denies the message that he received as a child, which was that he was "nothing" (Wilson 1386). This fundamental rejection undoubtedly contributes to Troys anger at the injustice in
this life, which is another his fundamental characteristics. Central to Troys personal history is the fact that he was a talented baseball player who entered middle-age and became too
old to play baseball just as the major leagues were beginning to accept black players in the late 1950s. The injustice of this haunts Troy who says, "Im talking about
if you could play ball then they ought to have let you play...Come telling me I come along too early. If you could play...then they ought to have let you
play" (Wilson 1364). It is this underlying anger that prompts Troy to thwart his son Corys ambitions to win a football scholarship. "I decided seventeen years ago that boy wasnt
getting involved in no sports. Not after what they did to me in the sports" (Wilson 1380). As this suggests, Troy fails to differentiate between his own desires and history
