distinguished career. This paper considers the characters of Lyons and Cory in Fences; how they are similar and dissimilar, and how they are like and unlike Troy, their father. Discussion
Troy Maxon is a proud black man who appears to have been born about 20 years too early. When the play opens its 1957 and the sweeping changes of the
1960s were still on the horizon. Life for blacks was difficult and their attempts to better themselves were met by scorn and virulent racism. If Troy were younger he could
be part of the Civil Rights movement and the gains blacks finally started to make; as it is, hes 53 when the play opens and he can only watch as
others take advantage of the changes in society. He is bitter and angry, selfish and self-justifying, but fascinating because he is so very human. Lyons is his son by his
first marriage, and Cory is the son of him and his wife Rose. Lyons and Cory are not on stage much so we have few references to help us understand
them. But it seems as though they could be the two halves of Troys character: Lyons is the dreamer, the one who depends on Troy to help him when he
needs a loan; and Cory is the ruthless side of Troy, determined to stand on his own. The two boys are reflections of the way Troys father treated him. Lyons
fancies himself a musician, but he never works the way professionals have to work if they are to actually make a living with their art. He seems to be
a dilettante, dreaming of being famous and having the kind of "fun" life he associates with musicians, but he isnt willing to put in the work necessary to get there.
